Lover of My Soul

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

A wealthy couple spent many years collecting fine art. One day, they added a Monet to their collection that immediately became the wife’s favorite. Though they shared a love of art, the husband’s love for his wife grew cold and he filed for divorce. She kept the Monet.

Within a few short years, the wife contracted a terminal illness and died. When her will was read, everyone was surprised that she had bequeathed the Monet to her ex-husband. As it turned out, she never stopped loving him and demonstrated that by giving him her most prized possession.

This exchange is the same one that God made on our behalf. It is difficult for us to fathom with our limited brains, but God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have been together forever. Jesus was God’s most precious possession. Even though none of us deserves it, God showed us how much He loves us by sacrificing Jesus on our behalf. This reality should blow your mind!

If I had to choose, I would say my most prized possession on earth is my wife Kellie. I cannot imagine giving her up to show someone else the extent of my love for them. This is one of the many things that separate us from God. His love is totally selfless and self-sacrificing.

When you view God in these terms, it is nearly impossible to see Him as anything but good.

I have had the privilege of visiting many churches over the years. Working in cities like New York, Hartford and New Haven, I have been exposed to a lot of street preachers and evangelists. Predominantly, their message is “turn or burn.” In a nutshell, they show people how vast and how wide their sins are. They tell people if they don’t repent and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they are destined to spend eternity in hell.

In my opinion, I think we are better off telling people how vast and how wide God’s love for them is. Most people don’t understand that God actually wants to be in a relationship with them where they give and receive love. God wants to pour out blessings upon us, heal our bodies, restore our relationships and prosper us financially. The only requirement is that we believe these things to be true and receive them in to our lives. It is much simpler than we make it out to be.

Think about your most prized possession. Is there anything that you would be willing to sacrifice that for? Reflect upon the fact that God sacrificed His only Son to show you how much He loves you. Let His love for you fill your heart and soul. As you do, that love will overflow and impact the lives of those around you. Focus on God and His nature will slowly become your own. Then you will become a world changer and selfless lover of others just like your Daddy in heaven!
