“Let Justice Roll” – Song by Julie-Ann Toalston

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” Amos 5:24

A cry for justice is at the center of the scriptures and therefore at the center of God’s heart. What exactly does a just, whole, restored world look like? I felt it necessary to make a song that describes that with specificity, using language from the Bible.

This song, born over a year ago, wasn’t made in direct response to the crisis moment the U.S. is in right now. Yet the words have been, and continue to be, my deep, deep prayer and the prayer of those around the world pursuing the kingdom of God. Dismantling racism isn’t a narrow political agenda; it’s part of God’s everlasting cosmic agenda. And it’s not too late to get on board.

Let Justice Roll

So let justice roll like a river
And righteousness like a mighty stream
Let a tide of mercy rise and carry us back to you
We call on your kingdom to set every wrong thing right

When the prisoner is released
And the war dissolves in peace
Decay in nature finally mended
Unjust systems are upended
Outcasts are seated at the table
The powerless say “I am able”
Debts and debtors are forgiven
Earth is swallowed up by heaven
And all iniquity is washed away
In that coming eternal day

When the oppressor is dethroned
And the orphan finds a home
Stolen goods are restored
Land, sea and the air are made pure
Death and disease choked out by life
Healing for all our division and strife
When truth is our banner and joy is our song
No more crying out, “How long?”
And all iniquity is washed away
O how we long to see that day

So let justice roll like a river
And righteousness like a mighty stream
Let a tide of mercy rise and carry us back to you
We call on your kingdom to set every wrong thing right
We call on your kingdom to set every wrong thing right
We call on King Jesus, usher in abundant life
