What is Advent?
Advent is a four-week season dedicated to preparation for the arrival, or coming, of Jesus’s Nativity at Christmas time, as well as Jesus’s expected return in the Second Coming. Each week of Advent focuses on a different theme – hope, peace, joy, and love.
The 2024 Advent Schedule is as follows with some suggested Scriptures:
Week 1 (December 1) Hope: Isaiah 9
Week 2 (December 8) Peace: Isaiah 40
Week 3 (December 15) Joy: Matthew 2
Week 4 (December 22) Love: John 3
An Advent wreath with colored candles represents each of the four weeks with a white candle in the center representing Christmas Day, or Jesus’s arrival. In addition, daily advent prayers and Scriptures may be recited as part of our preparation, and an advent calendar counts down the days to Jesus’ arrival.
However you choose to engage in the Advent season, may your time of prayer, devotion, and contemplation bring you closer to the Lord and Savior.
